I’m a follower of many personal development mentors out there, one of them being the late Jim Rohn. Jim’s mentor was the late John Earl Shoaff. Mr. Shoaff told Jim one day “if you want to be wealthy and healthy, you must learn this lesson: Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on you job.”
Personal development includes activities like increasing your awareness of skill sets like sales, negotiation, and marketing. It develops your talents and potential that builds human capital and makes you more marketable in your chosen field. In other words, it enhances your life that leads to the contribution of the realization of your dreams and aspirations. It is not limited to developing of ones self. It also includes the development of other people.
How does personal Development Help Others?
Your ability to learn about the human mind and its capacity will indirectly affect the outcomes of other people’s lives. For example, I read in SUCCESS magazine that someone gave up her childhood dream for 17 years because a remark she got from a 10th grade teacher. She was inspired to be a teacher because of her 4th grade teacher who had this contagious energy. Her 10th grade teacher “called her up to his desk at the start of class one day and, not bothering to lower his voice, told her that her grades were abysmal and he was sending her to a lower-level course.” He told her “you don’t understand math. You shouldn’t even think about college.”
Since this little girl at the time was brought up to believe in the wisdom of a teacher, she took this remark to heart. The straight A’s she received in her other classes soon became C’s. That day she gave up on her dream until 17 years later.
You see, we all have the power to influence other people. A negative remark can wipe out a dream and destroy a person’s future. In other words, in this case, this woman did not live with total passion for 17 years. But a little bit of encouragement can plant a seed, grow a pathway, and give someone the strength to persevere.
Personal Development Lasts…..
How long do you think you should engage in the practice of development of your own human potential? A week? A month? How about 5 years or 20 years? Well I believe it lasts for a lifetime. You could never stop growing into a better version of yourself. Life is about growth. You should never stop growing. You have the ability to impact future generations of the work you do on this earth. You can’t do that if you choose to stop growing.
How Does Personal Development Affect Your Life?
Whenever you set a goal most people will focus in on their goal. In other words if you set a goal to have a certain income on a monthly or yearly basis, you will see that dollar amount. What you should focus on is what you will become in the process of achieving that goal. What you get will only be in proportion to what you become. What you have today in all areas of your life, you’ve attracted by becoming the person you are today.
Years ago I had a sudden doubling of my annual salary. I never thought about this before as to why that happen, but a few short years later my salary went down back to the level I started prior to the 100 percent increase of my salary. As years went on I questioned why this happened and when I got into personal development I found the answer through Jim Rohn. He said “income rarely exceeds personal development. Sometimes income takes a lucky jump, but unless you learn to handle the responsibilities that come with it, it will usually shrink back to the amount you can handle.” Wow, what a statement! I learned a tough lesson that I could not handle the money management of what I thought was a huge salary. Jim was right.
Again, “to have more than you’ve got, become more than you are.” ~ Jim Rohn
So what did you learn today? How will you change your thoughts, feelings and actions?
The Key To Your Better Future Is Left Up To You,
